Abstract.
This article explores modern strategies for enhancing the environmental sustainability of megacities through the lens of cost-effective wastewater treatment and water reuse opportunities. The author proposes a framework for integrating circular water economy principles into water purification systems, based on an economic analysis of successful case studies (Singapore, Copenhagen) and UNEP data. Special attention is given to domestic innovations, such as bioreactors with immobilized microorganisms and membrane technologies, which reduce energy consumption by 30–40 %. The study demonstrates the economic viability of transitioning to "zero-discharge" systems, with potential annual savings of up to 2.8 billion RUB for a city of one million inhabitants.
